Le Finistère est un département français situé en région Bretagne. Il tire son nom de son positionnement géographique (Finistère = Fin de la terre); certains évoquent l'abbaye Saint-Mathieu de Fine-Terre dite en latin « Sanctus Mattheus finis terræ » ou « in finibus terræ » (soit Saint-Mathieu du bout du monde).
Le Finistère fut créé en 1790 à l'instar de la majorité des départements français, formé à partir du Léon, au nord, des deux tiers de la Cornouaille dont Quimper, sa capitale, au sud, de l'extrême ouest du Trégor, au nord-est, ainsi que d'une fraction du Vannetais au sud-est. Quimper, la deuxième agglomération du Finistère, en est le chef-lieu, et Brest, Morlaix et Châteaulin, respectivement premier, troisième et quatrième arrondissements, en sont les sous-préfectures.

Finistère is a French department located in the Brittany region. It takes its name from its geographical location (Finistère = End of the Earth); some refer to the Abbey of Saint-Mathieu de Fine-Terre, known in Latin as "Sanctus Mattheus finis terræ" or "in finibus terræ" (meaning Saint-Mathieu at the end of the world). Finistère was created in 1790, like most French departments, formed from Léon in the north, two-thirds of Cornouaille including Quimper, its capital, in the south, the extreme west of Trégor in the north-east, and a fraction of Vannetais in the south-east. Quimper, the second largest city in Finistère, is its capital, and Brest, Morlaix and Châteaulin, respectively the first, third and fourth arrondissements, are its sub-prefectures.
